　　Love is like the wild rose-briar;

　　Friendship like the holly-tree*.

　　The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms*,

　　But which will bloom most constantly?

　　*The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,

　　Its summer blossoms scent the air;

　　Yet wait till winter comes again,

　　And who will call the wild-briar fair? *

　　Then, scorn the silly rose-wreath now,

　　And deck thee with hollys sheen,

　　That, when December blights thy brow,

　　He still may leave thy garland en.*

　　*愛情像野玫瑰，友情像冬青。

　　當玫瑰開花的時候，冬青卻墨綠著，表示愛情激烈而友情則平淡。

　　哪種能保持盛開的狀態，答案當然是后者。

　　*野玫瑰在春天和夏天開花，花香四溢。

　　但是到了冬天，誰會說它漂亮呢？

　　表示愛情之花盛開的時候十分甜蜜，但過了高潮，就不再值得稱道了。

　　*冬青在平時不很惹眼，甚至遭人唾棄，但當冬天來臨，萬物皆枯萎的時候，

　　花園里的它還充滿生機和活力。

　　表示友情平時可能不為人所重視或注意，但在人們遇到困難，沒有其他出路

　　的時候，它可能成為你的希望所在。
