　　漢字的偏旁部首是同部字的共同形旁，同時它們還起著共同的表意作用。在相、盯、看、睿、瞥這組字中，有一個共同的構成部分目字，它不僅使每個字都具有用眼睛觀看的基本意義，還使這組字成為同部字。像漢字由偏旁部首組成一樣，許多英語單詞也是由詞根、詞綴按照一定的邏輯聯系構成的。單詞數量雖然浩瀚如海，但常用的詞根、詞綴數量和漢字的偏旁部首差不多，只有二三百個。若利用詞根、詞綴對英語單詞進行構詞分析和解形釋義，單詞既好認又好記，詞義一目了然。如果像歸納分析同部漢字那樣歸納分析同根的英語單詞，還可舉一反三，觸類旁通，很快地記住一組組的單詞。這方面，構詞分析法與漢字的以形說義有異曲同工之妙，可以說是英語單詞的說文解字之二。

　　詞根是一個單詞的核心部分，它表示單詞的基本詞義。有的詞根能單獨使用而成為單詞，叫做自由詞根或根詞。前綴是加在詞根或單詞前面的部分，它具有一定的含義，能改變、限制或加強詞根和單詞的含義。前綴的表示方式是在字母或字母組合后面加一短橫，如 in-。后綴是加在詞根或單詞后面的部分，對詞根和單詞的意義進行補充。常用的后綴有名詞后綴、動詞后綴、副詞后綴和形容詞后綴四種形式。后綴的表示方式是在字母或字母組合前面加附一短橫，如-er。中綴是在單詞里起連接作用的字母或字母組合。
