一開始，他們都很團結。可有一天，鉛筆開始傲慢起來，鉛筆召集橡皮、削筆刀和筆盒開會，鉛筆說 ：“從今天開始，你們都要為我服務。”橡皮、削筆刀和筆盒答應了。從那時起，鉛筆故意刁難他們：鉛筆故意在紙上亂畫，讓橡皮為他美容，為此橡皮瘦了一大圈；鉛筆常找削筆刀為他剃頭，這讓削筆刀的牙齒都磨平了；鉛筆躺在軟綿綿的筆盒里，稍感覺有一點兒不舒服，就對筆盒破口大罵。可是他們從不說苦，因為他們認為鉛筆永遠是他們的好兄弟。
不久后，小紅的鉛筆盒里又添了幾支新鉛筆，他們對鉛筆老大說：“瞧瞧你的熊樣，小主人早該把你扔了。”鉛筆聽了，趕緊跑到鏡子前，想看看自己的模樣，只見鏡子里的自己又矮有瘦，樣子真像一根火柴。鉛筆見了，傷心地哭了起來。此時，橡皮、削筆刀和筆盒來到鉛筆面前，說：“在你刁難我們的`時候，其實也毀了你的面容，只要你和我們團結一致，咱們還是好兄弟。”聽了他們的話，鉛筆慚愧地低下了頭。
