《天邊外》與《邊城》悲劇性之對比研究

A Comparative Study of the Tragic Features in Beyond the Horizon and The Remote Town
Abstract
Beyond the Horizon and The Remote Town are two celebrated modern tragedies both published at the beginning of the 20th century. Although they belong to different literary genres and are based of different culture backgrounds, they have great affinities in protagonists, structure, motif, tragic collisions etc.
This thesis consists of three parts. The first part introduces Eugene O’Neill’s view of tragedy and Shen Congwen’s understanding of tragedy. The other two parts analyze the similarities and differences of the tragic features in Beyond the Horizon and The Remote Town. With the comparative study of the tragic features in the two works, we tend to develop the idea that though China and the West do not have the same tragedy tradition, the do share some similarities in understanding and creating modern tragedy. The differences of the two works also demonstrate that modern tragedy has a more complex and variable form according to different cultures, understandings and literary traditions.

摘 要
《天邊外》和《邊城》這兩部作品都是210世紀初解除的現代悲劇作品。雖然植根于不同的文化背景，屬于不同的文體，但兩部作品在人物、結構、主題和悲劇沖突等方面都有著驚人的相似。
本文共有3部分。第1部分介紹了尤金•奧尼爾和沈從文兩位作家對悲劇的理解。其它兩部分分別闡述了《天邊外》與《邊城》兩部作品在悲劇性方面的相似點和差異之處。通過對兩部作品悲劇性的比較研究，本文試論證了雖然中國和西方的有著不同的悲劇傳統，但他們在現代悲劇的理解和創作上確有相似之處；兩部作品在悲劇性上的差異也表明了由于不同的文化和文學傳統，現代悲劇可以有復雜多樣的表現形式。
